VOTE OF THANKS - ABUJA, NIGERIA, SEPT 2006

VOTE OF THANKS AT THE CLOSING CERFMONY OF THE 52nd COMMONWEALTH PARLIAMENTARY CONFERENCE DELIVERED BY THECLA C. DETERVILLE ON BEHALF OF ACCOMPANY PERSONS, PARTNERS & SPOUSES Abuja – Nigeria September 1st to 10th, 2006.

Your Excellency the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Vice-Patron, of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, I further observe the protocol list as enunciated by speakers before me, sisters and brothers, ladies and gentlemen all. It is indeed a privilege to be invited to express sincere gratitude and thanks on behalf of all the participating spouses, partners and accompanying persons. Let me begin by saying that experiencing the DUBAR was a memorable occasion of colour, pomp and ceremony and that we have all been enriched by the exposure to your rich cultural heritage, the impression was indeed indelible.

Our visit to your arts and craft village provided some of us with the opportunity to do what we do best, that is add value to economic activity and this I can assure you provided us with the opportunity to take back some tangible mementos of our visit here. Our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Senator Daisy Danjuma for her hospitality she can be called, the hostess Par Excellence. To Princess Ita Giwa, thank you for a wonderful evening and for ensuring that our wardrobes have been enhanced with a magnificent piece of Nigerian haute couture. Thank you very much for your generosity of spirit. The looks of anticipation and the warmth with which we were greeted at the Abuja Orphanage will ever remain with us. We valued tremendously the opportunity to share with them and it is my hope that when we return to our respective countries we will seek out orphanages where we can have similar experiences.

In my five years of attending CPA conferences it is the first time that Social activities have been organized jointly for CWP members and visiting spouses we do appreciate the recognition of our role in supporting our spouses in their political pursuits. This was certainly a welcomed addition and I hope it remains as a CPA feature for future conferences. To all dignitaries, organizers at all levels of the process, to our liaison and protocol officers, conference aids, security personnel, drivers, management and staff of our respective hotels, the villagers who welcomed us, members of the media, we say a special thanks, you were all magnificent and contributed greatly to the overall success of this conference.

You have by your contribution ensured that our memories of this conference are pleasant and long lasting. To all participants heartfelt thanks for the comradree and friendships that we fostered amongst ourselves, we crossed ethnic backgrounds and cultures and have through our interaction advanced the principles of sisterhood and brotherhood within the human family.

In closing I ask that you our host forgive any breaches of cultural insensitivity that we may have committed. Let me assure you that it is not an indication of disrespect but more out of ignorance of your cultural norms, values and customs. Ladies and Gentlemen, once again on behalf of all visiting spouses, accompanying persons and partners a big THANK YOU. ESHEUN – Yoruba; NA GOODEY – Hausa; DAALU- Igbo.

EXCERPTS FROM ADDRESS TO GRADUATING CLASS OF 2009 - ST. JOSEPH'S CONVENT, SAINT LUCIA

EXCERPTS FROM
ADDRESS DELIVERED BY THECLA C. DETERVILLE OF CELESTIAL SELF DEVELOPMENT CENTRE, SANS SOUCI, CASTRIES
AT THE AWARDS EVENING OF THE SAINT JOSEPH’S CONVENT SECONDARY SCHOOL, CEDARS, CASTRIES ON THURSDAY 15TH OCTOBER, 2009 COMMENCING AT 5.30 P.M.

THEME: “UNLEASHING THE EXTROARDINARY’

It is really an honour to be invited to share this special occasion with you. It has been more years than I could like to recall that I too experienced the blessing of graduating from this august institution. An institution that has impacted the lives of so many Saint Lucian women. An experience that I will always cherish and one of which I have very found memories. I have also had the privilege of having my two daughters educated here, that too was an enriching experience. So you understand the pride that I feel standing here before you. I am indeed grateful for the solid foundation that I acquired at the Saint Joseph’s Convent Secondary School.

There is a story about two shoe salesmen who went to a developing country to open up new territories. Two days after they arrived, the first salesman sent an e-mail to his boss saying “returning next plane. Can’t sell shoes here. Everybody goes barefoot.” The second salesman sent an e-mail to the home office on the third day. The message was. “Please find attached 60 orders – more to follow. Prospects, unlimited. Nobody here has shoes.” End of story.

My question to you is, in which category do you fall? The one who sees the glass half full or the one who sees it half-empty. The optimist or the pessimist.

Your theme, “Unleashing the Extraordinary”, is in itself an affirmation that there is something somewhere to be explored, something which is not ordinary, which is not the run of the mill but which goes beyond what is usual. Something, below the surface waiting to emerge, something magnificent, something special. The word unleash connotes that there is need to release something. Your theme therefore is an acknowledgement of the potential that you each possess and an invitation to let that potential, flow, let it manifest, give it life, bring it to the fore, a call to bring it to fruition.

We hear it often said that the sky is the limit; this is an indication of the altitude that you can attain if you have the right attitude to your own growth and development. You can envision what the possibilities are but to do that you must take time to introspect, “to be still and know” as the good book admonishes us to do. We must take time out to go within, I am sure you have heard of the acronym SWOT. It is a tool of analysis that is usually used in strategic planning for businesses, but it also has relevance on a personal level. I invite you to conduct a SWOT on yourself, that is, to examine what your STRENGTHS and WEAKNESSES are, what OPPORTUNITIES do you see for yourself, take a world view, what are the global trends, what are the THREATS? What can stop you from achieving your goals? What can you do to lessen the impact or militate against these threats? Self awareness is very important, it is not only about how others see us it is also about how we see ourselves, do we know who we are. Not what others tell us, but what we believe about ourselves. Do not be afraid of what you find, being aware of these traits provides us with an opportunity to rethink or to rework what we see and do not like, to make changes, to make the necessary adjustments. After such analysis, weaknesses can become strengths and threats can translate into opportunities, as I indicated in my opening story. It all depends on how you CHOOSE to see it.

Whilst you are at it, this is as good a time as any, if you have not already done so to ask yourself some hard questions.

What is my purpose, why am I here? What is it that I love to do? What is it that I am very good at that I can also earn a living from? What is it that is effortless for me to do and to get a positive result? What is it that when I am doing it time does not matter? What am I passionate about? Where will my knowledge, skills, talents and abilities be best utilised? What contribution am I prepared to make to my life, that of my family and my country? What will my legacy be? What contribution can I make to the world in which I live? You are not too young to answer these questions; it is Lewis Carroll in Alice in Wonderland who said, and I quote, “If you do not know where you are going, any road will take you there.” End of quote. That certainly is not the road you want to be on.

We must always have a vision for ourselves, we live in a dynamic world, a world filled with challenges but also overflowing with opportunities, opportunities that people of my generation and my parents generation may not have had. You require that inner strength, that conviction that comes from faith in a being greater than yourself. While you strive for excellence and to be the best that you can be, do not forget the basic values that you learnt here, humility, personal integrity, honesty, sharing, caring, compassion, service to others, an attitude of gratitude, love for yourself and your neighbour and the list goes on.

One trend I am observing amongst too many young women in our country that disturbs me, is a movement away from the desire to be independent. When I refer to independence I do not mean being bullish or pig headed, I mean being able to do for yourself what others can do for you. The – “gee me” –mentality is much too pervasive, yes others can assist but do not live your life in a manner that make you totally dependent on another human being. This is a recipe for disaster, like I said earlier, if you do things in a particular way over time it becomes a habit, initially your being dependent on another may be a novelty but over time it can deteriorate into a form of slavery and by that time the habit may be too well entrenched to be easily broken, and you will certainly pay the price.

Steve Covey one of my favourite business authors refers to interdependence which is the co-existence amongst equals. But he claims that before we can be interdependent we must first be independent, and as young ladies I ask that you reflect on this. Be your own person, set boundaries for yourselves, be open to new ideas, explore, read extensively not only academic pursuits, read to broaden your horizons. Use your time wisely, strive for balance you are made up of body, mind and spirit, make time to nurture each aspect of your being. Take care of that beautiful body that God has given you, what you put into it, how you use it, you may not be a commodity on the market but keep yourself marketable. Develop your mind through your reading, your travel, the type of material that you view, not engaging in activities that debase you as a human being remember you must always be able to live with yourself, who you know YOU to be. Your spirit, we are made in the image and likeness of GOD that makes us special.

I implore you to go out there and make a difference, Saint Lucia needs you the world needs you, do not be a fence sitter or a passer bye, make your contribution as you alone can, commit to something, be responsible and accountable.

As you move along the spectrum of Unleashing the Extraordinary, I leave you with these words from: Luke Chapter 11 Verse 9: “Ask and you shall receive; seek and you shall find, knock and the door shall be opened unto you.” End of verse.

Graduates, Congratulations, to all of you I wish you all the best as you continue to let your light shine, and remember to whom much is given, must is expected. Your parents have made the necessary sacrifices; your teachers have played their part, your other support structures have made their contribution, now it is your time to add value and to move the process forward, and emerge as YOUR BEST SELF- EXTROARDINARILY YOU!!!.
I thank you.
Watch this space. The entire speech will be available on DVD and CD at a later date.

INSPIRATIONAL TALK

INSPIRATIONAL TALK
THE ANNUAL SASHING CEREMONHY FOR THE NATIONAL CARNIVAL QUEEN PARGENT
SANDALS REGENCY GOLF RESORT & SPA, LA TOC
FRIDAY 12TH JUNE, 2009 from 8.00 p.m.

THEME: BEAUTY, EDUCATION AND TALENT
Members of the Head Table, Sponsors, contestants, specially invited guest, members of the media, ladies and gentlemen good evening.
It is indeed an honour to have been asked to share some words of inspiration with such a beautiful group of young, educated and talented young women. I can make this comment because I am aware that you are here after having been selected from a larger group of your peers following an audition. In effect you have earned the right to be here.
Steve Covey one of my favourite authors in his book “the seven habits of highly effective people” his 7th habit advises us “To Sharpen the Saw” – that is, we must be committed to life long learning. Your participation in this pageant provides you with an opportunity to learn new things. To sharpen your skills, to gain self esteem and self- confidence, to be more assertive - and mark the use of the word assertive and not aggressive as these words do not mean the same, they are not interchangeable. To be assertive is to be – confident and direct in dealing with others and to be aggressive is to be inclined to behave in an actively hostile fashion.
Life is a collection of experiences; this is but one experience in a number of experiences. Whereas we are aware that some persons may have a tendency to down play the value of such as experience, at the end of the day what makes the difference is how you use this opportunity. It is the quality of the choices you make, that will make the difference.
We have heard the saying from the good book “Where there is no Vision the People Perish”. Do you have a personal vision for yourself, where do you see yourself in 5 years in, 10 years in 15 years, and beyond? What are your plans for your future, yes, you are beautiful and talented you have a secondary education, what next for you? Time and tide waits for no man – if you fail to play you are planning to fail. Research has shown that people who put their plans down in writing are more likely to succeed than those who do not. It is always advisable to live your life in stages, you are here now, for you this may be a new beginning but the ending will be determined by the choices that you make now and in the future. As I mentioned earlier life is a collection of experiences and choices and the choices we make NOW will always determine our future, do ensure that you make wise choices the will positively impact your future growth and development.
Steve Covey also advises us to strive for interdependence, but before we can be interdependent we must first learn to be independent. The question should always be what can I do for me? After you have done that you can then have expectations of others. But first learn what you can do for yourself even if it means having to ask for help in the process, but first show that self determination. Demonstrate your personal drive and the will to succeed. It has to begin with your contribution.
We must also learn to be flexible, if one plan does not work out be sufficiently perceptive to make the require change. Do not consider yourself a failure, if things do not work out as you first planned be persistent and see it as an opportunity to learn valuable lessons, to re-focus and move on. Set standards for yourself, do not short change yourself, yes you may fail sometimes but it is not that you will never fail but what makes the difference is how you respond to that initial failure whether you remain down and play dead or you pick your self up, dust your self down and move on., be the role model you want to see, if in the process you serve as a role model for others then that is a win/win situation, that is icening on the cake.
We all have 24 hours in one day, the difference between those who achieve their goals and their life’s purpose, and those who do not, is how we spend our twenty-four hours. If all our waking time is spent in unproductive activity how can we expect to match up to someone who manages their time allocating appropriate portions of time to various activities, work/ or productive activity, study, reading /research, play, entertainment, exercise, sleep etc. I do not need to tell you the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.
Support systems are important whether it be a group of trusted, positive and focused friends or family members. When we have the right people in our corner it adds value to the quality of our lives. Sometime we have a tendency when things begin to look up for us, we turn our backs on those who nurtured us and provided the base for our development though their hard work and sacrifice. If you are on the up and up it is more beneficial for you in the long run to take willing family members with you. Because at the end of the day they are the ones that will be there for you when the going gets tough, and it usually does, sometimes when we lease expect. Not that you should dwell on negative things happening before they do and the key word here is DWELL, you can anticipate, be aware of what is possible but do not dwell on the negative because the mind does not know the difference between what is and what is imagined, and if you dwell on the negative you go though the psychological trauma as if the event which you imagine has actually happened and this certainly is not beneficial to you.
Obviously you need to keep an eye out for those who are in Siren mode “They only WAWAWA…..- a terrible place to be particularly if they are in the receiving mode only and not the giving mode. [I must acknowledge that I got that SIREN line from one of my Barbers, and it had me in stitches].
Beauty and brains are a marvelous combination but remember their must be harmony and or balance in your growth cycle and ensure that your beauty radiates from within, that what we see on the outside is a true reflection of what resides on the inside.
As human beings you comprise body, mind and spirit endeavour to nuture all aspect s of your being. It was Kahlil Gibran author of the Prophet who said and I quote “Beauty is not in the face; beauty is a light in the heart.” End of quote.
I invite you to adopt a basic philosophy for living encapsulated in the acronym GRABS, it invites us to be grateful, to release the past and to receive graciously, to acknowledge what needs to be acknowledged and to ask when we need to ask, to BE who we are and not attempt to be carbon copies of anyone, to believe in something, and last but not least to share our time, talent and treasure with the rest of humanity, particularly those in need.
I also invite you to see you participation in this pageant as a journey not a destination. I leave you with this quote by Don Williams Jr.
“The road of life twists and turns and no two directions are ever the same. Yet our lessons come from the journey, not the destination.”
Regardless of whether you emerge the winner of this pageant or not, I know you will emerge at the end of this process better for it, more self assured, more confident, having gathered tips along the way in grooming, public speaking, your self esteem and self confidence will have taken a quantum leap. You would have made more friends along the way; you certainly would have accumulated a network which will serve you in good stead in the future. So you have learnt and you have grown you have added value to yourself you have increased your skill sets and you have set a foundation for a brighter future but again the choices you make is what will determine whether these are true for you or not. It is my hope that you as beautiful, intelligent and talented young women will make the right choices which will be beneficial to you, your families, your sponsors and support team who have invested so much in you, and by extension your country who will also be the beneficiary of who or what you become.
I see you all as winners and I hope you see yourself as such regardless of who wears the crown.
Enjoy the journey. Peace & Love.

About the Workshop The world faces a financial crisis, with hundred-year-old firms and trusted banks suddenly gone- and everything changes. The planet encounters environmental calamities, with entire cities inundated by water in angry waves or winds in savage swirls – and everything changes. The political system everywhere is reduced to mud-slinging, bickering, with intelligent, issues-oriented discourse replaced by simplistic cultural wars – and everything changes. Or on a more personal level …. A dear one has died, or a romantic relationship has ended, or a job has evaporated – and everything changes. Or your child has left home, or you have had to migrate, or you are suddenly facing a major health challenge – and everything changes. Whatever the circumstance, you are sure about one thing: Nothing is every going to be the same. Deep sadness, even bitter negativity, can sometimes follow such a realization.

What to do next? End the type of life that you have been living? Yes, that is the startling answer from modern day spiritual messenger Neale Donald Walsch, in a spiritual renewal retreat that seeks to return people everywhere to a place of hope by applying the messages of “Conversations with God” to on-the ground events, right here, right NOW. WHEN EVERYTHING CHANGES, CHANGE EVERYTHING - speaks to the heart of all people who have lost their bearings in the aftermath of change – and to those who would help them. A strikingly clear, imminently useful program, it offers new insights on the way to move on, and a breathtaking reason to do so. In a time of upheaval, here is a path to peace – and a new way to be human.
